Assembly<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>General elections<\/h2>\n<p>Elections to the UK Parliament usually take place every 5 years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To vote in a general election you must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">registered to vote&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be 18 or over on the day of the election (\u2018polling day\u2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be a British, Irish or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualifying Commonwealth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> citizen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be resident at an address in the UK (or legally excluded from voting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the UK Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a Not all local government elections take place at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your local government will do one of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elect all the local councillors every 4 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elect half the local councillors every 2 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elect one third of the local councillors every year for 3 years and hold no elections in the 4th year<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To vote in a local government election you must:<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-to-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registered to vote<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be 18 or over on the day of the election (\u2018polling day\u2019) (16 or over in Scotland)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be registered at an address in the area you want to vote in<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not be legally excluded from voting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must also be one of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a British citizen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an Irish or EU citizen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a qualifying <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electoralcommission.org.uk\/i-am-a\/voter\/register-vote-and-update-your-details#commonwealth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commonwealth citizen<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a citizen of another country living in Scotland or Wales who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local government councillors in England and Wales are elected using the First Past the Post system. You vote for one candidate in your local area and the candidate with the most votes wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Scotland and Northern Ireland, councillors are elected using the Single Transferable Vote system. You rank the candidates in order of preference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you can vote in more than one local election<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you live in 2 different local authority areas (for example because you\u2019re a student), you may be able to vote in both areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-to-vote\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>register to vote<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in both areas. You make a first and second choice when you vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If no candidate gets more than 50% of the first choice votes, all except the top 2 candidates are eliminated. If your first choice candidate is eliminated, and your second choice is for one of the top 2, then your second choice is counted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To vote for a local mayor, you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must be <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/elections-in-the-uk\/local-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eligible to vote<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in local elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayor of London and London Assembly<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mayor of London makes decisions on behalf of the people of London. The 25 London Assembly Members make sure the Mayor\u2019s decisions are in the interests of the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To vote in the London Mayor and London Assembly elections you must:<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-to-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registered to vote<\/a><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be 18 or over on the day of the election (\u2018polling day\u2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be a British, Irish, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electoralcommission.org.uk\/i-am-a\/voter\/register-vote-and-update-your-details#commonwealth\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>qualifying Commonwealth<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or EU citizen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be resident at an address in Greater London<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not be legally excluded from voting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mayor of London is elected using the Supplementary Vote system. You can also apply for a postal or proxy vote instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out about <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/how-to-vote\/voting-and-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voting safely during coronavirus (COVID-19<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ways of voting<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can vote:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in person at a polling station<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by post<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by asking someone else to vote for you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(voting by proxy)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot vote online in any elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eligibility to vote<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can vote when you\u2019re:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 years old in England and Northern Ireland<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16 years old in Scottish Parliament and local elections (and other elections when you\u2019re 18)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16 years old in Welsh Parliament elections (and other elections when you\u2019re 18)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elections you can vote in<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different elections have different rules on who can vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>in person at a polling station<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You vote in person at a polling station (usually in a public building, such as a school or local hall).<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><b>Your poll card<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll be sent a poll card just before an election telling you when to vote and at which polling station. You can only vote at the polling station location on your card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have not received a poll card but think you should, contact your local Electoral Registration Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can still vote if you\u2019ve lost your card.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><b>When you can vote<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on the day of an election (\u2018polling day\u2019).<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><b>When you get to the polling station<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your name and address to the staff inside the polling station when you arrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll be given a ballot paper containing a list of the people, parties or options you can vote for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h2><b>ID you need to bring<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you live in England, Wales or Scotland you do not need to bring any identification to vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will need to show <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoni.org.uk\/Electoral-Identity-Card\/Electoral-Identity-Card-FAQs#q34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photo ID to vote in Northern Ireland<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (your passport, driving licence, Electoral Identity Card or certain kinds of Translink Smartpass). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not have to take your poll card with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><b>Filling in your ballot paper<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the instructions on the notices in the polling booth and on the top of the ballot paper to vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Voting if you have a disability<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a disability, your local Electoral Registration Office can tell you about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical access, for example wheelchair ramps and disabled parking spaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-level polling booths<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equipment for voters with a visual impairment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every polling station must provide at least one large print display version of the ballot paper and a special tactile voting device (TVD) to help people with sight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Voting by post<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apply for a postal vote<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you want to vote by post, for example if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019re away from home<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019re abroad and want to vote in England, Scotland or Wales<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not need to give a reason unless you\u2019re voting in Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><b>Apply for a postal vote<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a different form to apply to vote by post in Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Change where your postal vote card is sent<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a new application for a postal vote if you move house or you\u2019ll be away from home when the postal vote is sent out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a different form for Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Completing and returning your postal vote<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When voting by post, you should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mark your vote on your ballot paper in secret<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fill in the postal voting statement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put the ballot and statement in the envelope provided<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seal the envelope yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post your ballot back as quickly as possible to make sure it\u2019s counted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re too late to post your ballot paper<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take it to your local polling station by 10pm on election day, or Electoral Registration Office before they close.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Northern Ireland, take it to your local Area Electoral Office before they close.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Replace a lost or damaged ballot paper<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your ballot paper needs to clearly display your details and voting choice. If it has been damaged you need to get another one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can either:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask your local Electoral Registration Office to post a replacement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collect a replacement from your local Electoral Registration Office up to 5pm on election day (or the day before in Northern Ireland)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot vote at a polling station if you registered to vote by post but your ballot paper was lost or damaged.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Voting by proxy<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unable to vote in person you can ask someone to vote on your behalf. You\u2019ll need to tell them which candidate (or referendum outcome) you want to vote for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p><b>How to apply for a proxy vote<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/proxy-voting-application-forms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apply for a proxy vote<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;using a paper form.
