The coroner will decide either:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the cause of death is clear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that a post-mortem is needed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to hold an inquest<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The cause of death is clear<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the coroner decides that the cause of death is clear:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor signs a medical certificate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You take the medical certificate to the registrar to register the death.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coroner issues a certificate to the registrar stating a post-mortem is not needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>A post-mortem is needed<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coroner may decide a post-mortem is needed to find out how the person died. This can be done either in a hospital or mortuary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot object to a coroner\u2019s post-mortem &#8211; but if you\u2019ve asked the coroner must tell you (and the person\u2019s GP) when and where the examination will take place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>After the post-mortem<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coroner will release the body for a funeral once they have completed the post-mortem examinations and no further examinations are needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the body is released with no inquest, the coroner will send a form (\u2018Pink Form &#8211; form 100B\u2019) to the registrar stating the cause of death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coroner will also send a \u2018Certificate of Coroner &#8211; form Cremation 6\u2019 if the body is to be cremated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The coroner holds an inquest<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A coroner must hold an inquest if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the cause of death is still unknown<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the person might have died a violent or unnatural death<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the person might have died in prison or police custody<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will need to get an interim death certificate during the inquest, so you can notify the registrar of the death. Once the inquest is over, you can get the final death certificate from the registrar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Get an interim death certificate during the inquest<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need proof of the death while you wait for the inquest to finish, ask the coroner for an interim death certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the interim death certificate to notify a registrar of the death while the inquest is still taking place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use the interim death certificate to apply for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probate. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/applying-for-probate\/apply-for-probate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/applying-for-probate\/apply-for-probate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To report a death to more than one government organisation at once:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the coroner for the interim death certificate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">registrar. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-offices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-offices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The registrar will either help you report the death or give you a unique reference number. Use this number to report the death using the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell Us Once<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> service.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/after-a-death\/organisations-you-need-to-contact-and-tell-us-once\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/after-a-death\/organisations-you-need-to-contact-and-tell-us-once<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Get a death certificate<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the inquest, the corner will confirm the cause of death to the registrar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The registrar will register the death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can ask the registrar for a death certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Get help<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can get free, independent support from The Coroners\u2019 Courts Support Service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Coroners\u2019 Courts Support Service Helpline (England and Wales)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telephone: 0300 111 2141<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saturday, 9am to 2pm<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out about call charges <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/call-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/call-charges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2- Arrange the funeral<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The funeral can usually only take place after the death is registered. You can pay for a funeral director to arrange the funeral or do it yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should check if the person who died had made arrangements for their funeral &#8211; this could include prepaid funeral plans or life insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Coronavirus (COVID-19) and attending a funeral or wake<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are restrictions on who can attend a funeral and any related events (for example a wake) because of coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This guidance is for funerals and wakes in England. There\u2019s different guidance for :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organising and attending funerals in Scotland<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organising and attending funerals in Wales<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organising and attending funerals in Northern Ireland<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which we are&nbsp; going to explore at later date<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who can attend<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should not attend a funeral or wake if you\u2019re unwell with coronavirus symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can attend a funeral of a close family member if you\u2019re self-isolating because:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019ve been told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019ve had a positive COVID-19 test<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someone in your household has symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re self-isolating because you recently entered the UK from an amber list country or territory, you can attend a funeral of a close family member, member of your household or friend (if their close family members or members of their household cannot attend).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in quarantine because you\u2019ve recently travelled to England from a red list country or territory, you might be able to attend a funeral of a close family member or member of your household. You must get permission from the managed quarantine hotel you\u2019re staying in to leave the hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot attend a wake or other event related to the funeral if you\u2019re self-isolating or in quarantine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Funeral directors<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you hire a funeral director, choose a funeral director who\u2019s a member of either:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Association of Funeral Directors<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/saif.org.uk\/members-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/saif.org.uk\/members-search\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These organisations have codes of practice &#8211; they should give you a price list when asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local councils<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> run their own funeral services, for example for non-religious burials. The British Humanist Association and Institute of Civil Funerals can also help with non-religious funerals.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Arranging the funeral yourself<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact the Cemeteries and Crematorium Department of your local council to arrange a funeral yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funeral costs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funeral costs can include:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>funeral director fees<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things the funeral director pays for on your behalf (called \u2018disbursements\u2019 or \u2018third-party costs\u2019), for example crematorium or cemetery fees, or a newspaper announcement about the death<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local authority burial or cremation fees<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funeral directors may list all these costs in their quote. You can get quotes from several funeral directors to see what is available within your budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Money Advice Service has information about funeral costs and how to reduce them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Paying for a funeral<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The funeral can be paid for:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a financial scheme the person had, for example a pre-paid funeral plan or insurance policy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by you, or other family members or friends<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with money from the person\u2019s estate (savings, for example) &#8211; getting access to this is called applying for a \u2018grant of representation\u2019 (sometimes called \u2018applying for probate\u2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apply for a Funeral<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Expenses Payment if you have difficulty paying for the funeral. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/funeral-payments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/funeral-payments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Moving a body for a funeral abroad<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need permission from a coroner to move a body for a funeral abroad. They will either:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete the Tell Us Once service with you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">give you a unique reference number so you can use the service yourself online or by phone<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The registrar will give you a number to call. This includes a&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dwptuo.signvideo.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video relay service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;for British Sign Language (BSL) users and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.relayuk.bt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relay UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;if you cannot hear or speak on the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must use the service within 28 days of getting your unique reference number.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you cannot register the death because an inquest is underway, you can still&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-offices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask a registrar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;for a unique reference number.
