March 26th Free Bus Travel Campaign with Citizens UK

Asylum seekers share their poignant experiences highlighting isolation, difficult choices between essentials and travel, and the burdens of walking long distances due to limited transportation options.

On March 26th, the Free Bus Travel Campaign, in collaboration with Citizens UK, resonated with the powerful voices of asylum seekers and advocates alike. The event shed light on the dire need for free bus travel for asylum seekers, showcasing the transformative impact of collective action and community solidarity.

Asylum seekers spoke of their challenges, with one individual expressing,
"I cannot go anywhere; I feel very isolated."

This sentiment reflects the harsh reality faced by many asylum seekers who lack affordable transportation options, limiting their access to essential services and opportunities for social connection.

Another poignant statement highlighted the difficult choices asylum seekers are forced to make, saying, “Asylum seekers have to choose between a meal or travel.” This heartbreaking decision underscores the urgent need for policies that provide dignified and accessible transportation for vulnerable populations.

For those without access to transportation, walking becomes a daily struggle. “Many have no choice but to walk everywhere,” emphasising the physical and mental toll of long journeys on foot, especially in urban environments where distances can be significant.

“ We have to choose between feeding our children or afford a journey to seek medical help? Walk endlessly to study or miss crucial doctor appointments, risking untreated symptoms that haunt us. Our journeys are marked not just by distance but by the weight of impossible decisions, hoping for a world where dignity includes access to essential services, not just endless paths.”

The Free Bus Travel Campaign, with support from Citizens UK, seeks to address these pressing challenges by advocating for fair and dignified travel options for asylum seekers. “We want dignified travel for asylum seekers,” encapsulates the campaign’s mission to restore autonomy and dignity to those navigating complex immigration processes.

The success of this campaign lies not only in policy changes but also in amplifying these crucial voices and stories. By centering the experiences of asylum seekers and collaborating with community partners like Citizens UK, the campaign strives to create lasting change and foster a more inclusive society.

March 26th was a success not just with raising awareness and the powerful community organising techniques that were used but the people’s power.

‘Building people power’ with Fiona Tayor CEO and Darren Rodwell leader, Saima Ashraf (Deputy Leader), Dominic Twomey (Deputy Leader).Barking and Dagenham Councillors Zamee, Rahman, Ghani and other Newham Councillor Simon Rush joined us in solidarity for this monumental cause.

As we reflect on the March 26th event, let’s continue to uplift these voices, advocate for policy reforms, and work towards a future where everyone, regardless of their background, can access transportation with dignity and ease. Together, we can drive meaningful progress and build communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
